The tax on feminine hygiene products was instituted in 1965, according to Cuomo’s office. It’s estimated that the new law will save consumers roughly $10 million a year.
Supporters had contended that certain medical products already are exempted from state sales tax, as are other necessities, such as certain foods and drinks, plus more obscure items including gift shop sales at a state run veterans nursing home.
In other bill signing news, motorists should be prepared to slow down and change lanes when approaching vehicles with blue or green emergency lights.
Cuomo also approved legislation expanding the state’s “Move Over” law to include volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers. Before this expansion, drivers were only required to move over for red and white or amber flashing lights, which designate police and emergency or hazard vehicles.

Although it might take some time for motorists to adhere to the new law, D’Alessandro said the regulation will allow for more visibility on the road for both parties.
“It give us that extra buffer, at least this little extra buffer zone,” he said. “It provides everybody with a bit more time to get a better perspective.”.
